Edam Cheese Market
Here you can
see how the cheese is transported to the market by boat or by horse-drawn cart,
as it was in the olden days.
At the market, the farmer has his cheese unloaded by special cheese carriers –
in days gone by they were members of a special cheese bearers guild. The traders
test the cheese by
drilling holes in it and determine the quality and hence the price on t the
basis of this sample. If a batch goes down well with the trader, the cheese
bearers carry it t to the scales in the weighing house
on a hand-barrow.
Amsterdam
Check out the
absolute must-sees of the Dutch capital, because to actually see the Anne Frank
house and the Sunflowers painting by Van Gogh is an experience you can only
obtain in Amsterdam.
Rent a canal bike or take a trip on the 17th century canals by canal boat. It's
the b e best way to see the city; looking up at Amsterdam’s facades from water
level is breathtaking.
Stroll around the Jewish Quarter and visit the Jewish Historical Museum,
Portuguese Synagogue both located in the former Jewish quarter the Rembrandt
House displaying some biblical scenes.
Visit Anne Frank's house on the Prinsengracht Canal. Visiting the house is an
overwhelming emotional experience even if you have read the diary or seen the
film. A sliding bookcase marks the entrance to the cramped rooms in which, with
the help of friends who risked everything, Anne and her family hid for over two
years. Van Gogh's Sunflowers.
Who has not seen the Sunflowers on a million postcards a and copies in books and on articles, but seeing it for real is another thing all together. The almost fierce yet considered brushwork, the use of colour that literally radiates s sunshine; when you stand in front of the painting in the Van Gogh Museum you understand the world’s obsession and passion for the famous work.
Volendam
Anyone who wants to see the real beauty of Holland, goes to Volendam. As a result of its completely insulated location, this village preserved its character for six centuries, also because of the tough vitality of the fishermen. The characteristic small houses, which together with the canals and the drawbridges form the most picturesque spots, present the visitor an atmosphere of geniality and romance.
Giethoorn
Discover this charming village with its many canals and typical bridges l and beautiful gardens by walking boat ride or bike. The village Giethoorn with about 2500 habitants is unique in the Netherlands because of it's bridges, waterways and "punters" (typical boats from Giethoorn). You see 18th and 19th century farmhouses hidden between the trees and wooden bridges. Of course all this is best to view with a canal tour or trip by boat.
