chania shul

We have deliberately chosen to sail from Athens on a Wednesday so that we can spend Shabbat moored in Chania, davening in Crete's only "active" synagogue, Etz Hayyim, dating from the 14th century.

Until 1999, Etz Hayyim was a desecrated house of prayer that remained the sole Jewish monument on the island of Crete after the destruction of Crete's Jewish community in 1944; it stood as a somber record of the success of the Nazis in obliterating 2,300 years of Jewish presence on the island of Crete.

Between 1996 and 1999, the structure was painstakingly restored. The philosophy that directed this work is summed up in the phrase "עם ישראל חי" . Today it stands as a vibrant statement of Jewish life, vitality and values

Pre and Post Cruise
meteoraGreece's Jewish History goes back 2300 years or so. There are communities that have long since disappeared but there is still a lot to see.

Working with Greece's only Jewish Guide, Haim Ishakis of Athens, we have created a fabulous itinerary for an optional tour on mainland Greece during the days before the cruise.

Starting in Ioannina mid-day Monday June 11, we will visit Trikkala, the incredible clifftop monasteries of Meteora, Jewish Volos, Mt Pilion and Chalkida before arriving at Piraeus at 4pm to "board ship" for the cruise.

On the Wednesday we return to Athens, June 20, for those staying overnight, there will be a short tour of the city including the Acropolis, Jewish Athens and lunch followed by free time to enjoy the gorgeous hotel. In the evening the Farewell Dinner will take place on the roof terrace of the hotel.

For these pre- and post-cruise optional tours, you will enjoy delicious food provided by Rabbi Mendel Hendel of Chabad, Athens and will be accommodated in the best available hotels.
