If you happen to be in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands do not miss B'racha V'shalom V'gimilut Hasaidim (Blessing and Peace and Loving Deeds), in Charlotte Amalie, is the oldest synagogue in continious use under the American flag (the congregation was founded in 1796). Services are held Friday nights at 7:30, and guests are welcome. The building is open Mondays through Fridays from 9:30am to 4pm, and Saturdays when religious school is in season from 10am to noon. One unusual feature of the synagogue is its sands floor, a feature that is traced to the time of Spanish Inquisition. To hide their identity, Jews would practice their religion in cellars with sand floors beacuse they helped muffle the sound of their prayers and songs.
