Jewish Itineraries in Italy
Jewish Heritage - Trieste, Friuli, Venezia, Giulia, 3 nights/4 days
In these region, in the middle of Latin, Slavic and German areas, located
between the Republic
of Venice and the Habsburg
Empire, there are remarkable remains of the Jewish communities, mainly of
Ashkenazi origin.
In the 19th century the community of
Trieste
was the most important Jewish centre in Eastern Italy,
and it has been significant for the economical and cultural development of the
city. Some members of the community were considered to be the most illuminated
intellectuals of that period, and others founded the first insurance companies,
such as Generali.
In the period between years 1921 and 1941,
Trieste
offered assistance to thousands of Jews coming from Eastern and Central Europe
sailing to Israel, and for
this reason was dubbed
“Gateway to Zion”.
Trieste
is linked to the sad years of the racial persecutions, as it hosted the only
extermination camp in Italy.
Gorizia,
the city divided between Italy and Slovenia, and melting point of the
two cultures, had a restricted Jewish community since the 16th
century. The peculiarity of the Community of Gorizia is that the Jewish cemetery
has always been outside the Italian borders, as it was first under the Austrian
domain which conquered this area (which became Italian just after 1914), and
after the second World War the cemetery entered the Slovenian territory, the
present
Ro˛na Dolina.
Cividale del Friuli,
the seat of the first Longobard duchy in
Italy, is a nice city along the river Natisone.
The Jewish presence in this area between 12th and 17th
centuries is proved by documents, but unfortunately today there are no
monumental signs, except or some gravestones, which are preserved in the National Archaeoligical
Museum.
Key Tre will take you through centuries of Jewish history in Friuli Venezia
Giulia, with pleasant
enogastronomical tastings
during the journey. At the historic cafč San Marco in
Trieste
you will enjoy a
traditional Austro-Hungarian cake,
while in the area of Collio Goriziano you will taste the famous
wines,
renowned worldwide.
