Suggestion: This morning you can do an unforgettable 4-hour tour of the Featherbed Nature Reserve. This private reserve is accessible only by ferry and the excursion includes the ferry trip across the Knysna Lagoon to the reserve, a 4×4 trailer ride to the top of the western Head of Knysna and an optional 2,2km walk down the “Bush Buck” trail, through milkwood forests, into the sandstone cliffs and into the historic beachcomber caves. The sanctuary’s dome incorporates the ability to synthesise thunder and create short spells of rain from an irrigation system in the dome structure. Roofed viewpoints within the gorge have been erected for use during these brief rainstorms. Monkeyland is the world’s largest free-roaming primate sanctuary. Here you can wander around on your own or accompanied by a ranger.

30 June : Plettenberg Bay – Cape Town

Suggested: This morning you’ll depart Plettenberg Bay and travel over the spectacular Outeniqua Pass into the Little Karoo, arriving at Oudtshoorn, which was the “feather capital” of the world in the late 1800’s. (You could do hikes etc if you prefer in Knysna area) The Jewish community was very influential in the development of the industry and the growth of Oudtshoorn. There are about 20 Jewish families remaining. Visit the Cango Caves, an underground wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites, an ostrich farm (there is opportunity for limited ostrich riding here) and the Cango Wildlife Ranch. We may be able to have the Shul opened for you. Arrive at George Airport in the late afternoon from where you’ll take a flight to Cape Town. Your rental vehicle will be delivered to The Clarendon. Own arrangements – Proceed to explore this magical city. Take a cable-car up Table Mountain; visit the Jewish Museum and Holocaust Centre. The South African Jewish Museum was officially opened by former president Mr Nelson Mandela in 2000 and is a major attraction in CT. It is situated on the heritage site of the Gardens Synagogue, the Cape Town Holocaust Centre and Gitlin library. The Museum narrates the story of SA Jewry from its early beginnings. Its entrance is situated in the Old synagogue that dates back to 1863. The museum is interactive and high-tech, providing a host of experiences at include audiovisual presentations, multimedia, reconstructed sets and interactive computers.

2 July – Cape Town

Own arrangements – suggested Depart on a full day sightseeing tour to Cape Point. This 25 mile drive to Cape Point should include a stop at Hout Bay, a beautiful fishing village from where a boat trip can be made to Duiker Island, to see the mass of seals (weather permitting) .To arrive at Cape Point, you pass through the 7750 hectare plant rich expanse of the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. This reserve is home to a variety of indigenous wildlife species including the Cape Mountain zebra, red lynx, caracal and a variety of antelope. In addition about five troops of chacma baboons frequent the area. There are also over 250 species of marine birds. Viewers may be lucky enough to spot seals, whales and dolphins. Leaving the reserve you drive along the False Bay coastline to Boulders beach, home of the largest Jackass Penguin colony in South Africa. A stop can then be made at Simonstown a naval base or Kalk Bay, the new “in” place for arts and crafts in the Cape. Then it’s back to the city via Boyes Drive.

Leaving Cape Town proceed through the spectacular mountain scenery and lush fertile valleys of the Cape to Stellenbosch, South Africa’s second oldest city. This oak lined university town has a museum showing different styles of architecture in the Cape from the 16th century. Make your way to Franschhoek, nestled in the valley where the French Huguenots first settled. Visit the Taal Monument in Paarl. Pass the Victor Verster Prison from where former President Mr. Nelson Mandela was released in 1994. The day can be spent combining a mixture of fascinating history with spectacular scenery and wine tastings at a kosher winery.

4 July : Cape Town

Robben Island is a heritage site, the maximum security “prison” where former president Nelson Mandela was held for 27 years. The Robben Island tour starts at Jetty 1 on the V&A Waterfront where the ticket office, shop and information centre is located. The standard tour includes a return boat trip across Table Bay, a visit to the infamous Maximum Security Prison; interaction with an ex-political prisoner; a 45 minute bus tour with a guide providing commentary; the opportunity to explore the Murray’s Bay Harbour precinct including the African penguin boardwalk and hide. Blyde River Canyon.  You will pass through many scenic routes while driving through this area. A number of waterfalls such as Mac Mac Falls could also be included in the tour.
