This morning meet our expert and member of the Lima Jewish community in your hotel’s lobby and depart in private transport to visit several important Jewish sites in the city.

Start your tour with a visit to the Museum of Inquisition, which has a dark history as many Jews were put on trial, tortured and held prisoner within this building during the Spanish Inquisition. Continue on to the House of Pilate (Casa de Pilatos), which was built in 1590 and is one of the oldest houses in Lima. It is a magnificent example of a Colonial house retaining many features characteristic of the early Colonial era, most notably its monumental staircase which is rarely found in architecture of Lima. The house was also used by Jews as a secretive hiding place from the Inquisition in Colonial times, with the downstairs cellar supposedly being used for Friday Worship.

Continue for a very special and personal lunch at your guide’s home, and an opportunity to discuss more about the places you have visited this morning or will visit this afternoon. Marvel over an impressive collection of books, photographs and other materials that our expert has compiled over the years about Jewish heritage in Lima and Peru.

After lunch, continue your tour to one of the three most important synagogues in the city to see how Judaism is practiced day‐to‐day in Lima.

You will also visit the Jewish Senior Citizens residence of Bikur Jolim, which possesses a beautiful complex of gardens and facilities for elder members of the community. Here you will have the privilege of meeting a relative of your Jewish expert’s family, with whom you can talk about their past and life nowadays for the Jewish people in Peru.

In the late afternoon, visit the Jewish School of Lima, Leon Pinelo, which is the only Jewish school in the city attended by over 400 students ranging from kindergarten to high school age. Guided by a representative of the school, you will visit different areas of the school, including the synagogue and the Hebrew reading room.

At a lower elevation than Cusco, the Valley is a warmer and less physically taxing environment for visiting the many attractions of the region, including Machu Picchu.

On your way to the Sacred Valley you will visit Sacsayhuaman which is the largest and most impressive of four archaeological ruins on the outskirts of Cusco. Built by the Incas, it served an important military function and was the site of a major battle with the Spanish in 1536. The complex was constructed out of massive stones, some weighing as much as 300 tons, cut to fit together without the use of mortar.

Later the hardier varieties of seeds were distributed throughout the Inca Empire. On the other side of the Urubamba Valley you’ll see dramatic snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba and Urubamba cordilleras (mountain ranges).

You leave this interesting archaeological site to follow to the town of Maras, which grew in importance in the 17th century because of the exploitation and commercialization of the “salineras” or saltpans. You will cross the extensive Maras Pampas, where people farm the land and rear cattle and sheep. The Urubamba mountain range and its snow-capped peaks provide a spectacular background for your visit, which you may choose to do by van or through a gentle hike. In the town of Maras you will learn about the facades of the ancient houses, made from finely worked stone, indicative of the economic heights achieved by the town’s population at that time.

Enjoy a picnic lunch (Special vegan option) and be part of a very special ceremony of sound and traditional offerings to Mother Earth. This ceremony evokes the spirit of healing; taking part of this ritual are many sacred medicines like Palo Santo, Tayta Sayri, Mama Coca, Agua Florida, Condor’s Feathers, Grandfather Puma, Essences and Incenses. We use many pre-hispanic instruments that have no musical register written, that’s why we let their own essence shine to heal with joy, love, color and life. To feel how the power of sound becomes a collective prayer that creates healing frequencies we must come with an open heart. One of the main purposes of sharing this experience is to revaluate and to radiate the culture of our original people. It can be recognize it as an amazing cross-cultural experience.
